The Baltimore Sun November 4, 1907 Page 7 Henry Bishop owner of Aquariums in Lakeland, Maryland died. He worked to set up a zoo in Baltimore. Born in Germany Bishop was a seafarer before settling in Baltimore. As a youngster he gained a an interest in nature studies. His work included a time in the employ of P. T. Barnum. He built a business which sold more than 1.5 million goldfish a year and had what is thought to be the worlds largest fish breeding operation located in Lakeland. His company supplied fish to Battery Aquarium, New York, Detroit, National Zoo, Young’s Pier, Atlantic City, Luna Park in Pittsburg, and more.

Death report along with biography of former ruler of a group of Indian providences. He made a tour of the Lakeland fisheries operation with Edwin Newman in 1907. The Gaekwar of Baroda was a progressive leader and world traveler.

Washington Post December 3, 2017 Page C3 John Kelly's Washington Henry Bishop, known as the “Gold Fish King” was a German immigrant who turned an interest in birds and fish into a successful business. His company sold the goldfish as well as aquariums, plants, ornaments, and food with the fish having their origin in Lakeland. Edwin Newman started his promotion of Lakeland with homes for sale on monthly payments. A main feature of the development was a park with Lake Artemisia. The lake was stocked with fish and outfitted with boats. Soon Mr. Bishop was using the body of water to raise his fish. In time there were about 25 acres of breeding ponds. The government also used pods in the area for breeding fish. A 1915 report detailed the excellent results of the operation in Lakeland. In Lakeland whites lived on the west while African Americans lived to the east. It is unclear when the use of fish ponds was discontinued. When the Metro’s Green Line was being built engineers realized the land in the are held sand and gravel which could’ve used for construction . One of their number Johann Sikkar proposed a cost saving measure of using that local gravel. Carrying out that plan resulted in a 38-acre park. Helping Hand Fundrasing campaign is underway to raise money for Bright Beginnings, N Street Village, and So Others Might Eat. The goal is $200,000 with $39,613 donated.

Washington Post July 26, 1992 Page B5 The Implausible Park; Metro Fashions New Oasis in Berwyn Heights Fehr, Stephen C. With flooding of Indian Creek, it was difficult to get to the new park built by Metro. The building of a park by a transit agency is unique. It was possible because of cost savings from use of fill from the Lakeland site for the building the Metro line. To bring material from another place would have cost $11.5 million and caused damage to local streets. Metro engineer, Johann Sikkar recommended digging the fill from “an undeveloped 38-accre area near the track bed”. The adoption of this concept saved $3.5 million. This made the new park basically free.

The pastor, Rev. F.P. Turner is getting ready for conference. He preached on Sunday evening. The children of J.H. Gray surprised him with a party in honor of his birthday. Guests included Ambrose Green, Rev and Mrs. J.W. Armstrong and their children, Lillie Welbourne from Bladensburg, Rev. F.P. Turner, Imogene Davis, Lawyer Peters, Mrs. G. Williams, Marie Walker, William Tayler, W,H. Gray and family, Lee Dines, Clem Hawkins, Annie Tate, Leslie Jones, and Rev. A.A. Jones from Washington DC.

Baltimore Afro American News Article April 14 1934 p. 18 Chestertown Five Tops Lakeland On Friday Garnett High School Tigers beat Lakeland High School the champions of the western shore. The venue was at capacity for the game which took place in Chestertown, Maryland. The Tigers star players were Graves and Jones. Stand outs for Lakeland were Davis and Webster.

The Baltimore Afro American January 7 1928 p 19 Lakeland, Maryland Pastor Rev. J.W. Wing held New Year’s Eve services On Friday at 8:00 PM the Embry AME Church Sunday School held Christmas exercises. Effie Stewart from Baltimore is visiting her parents and other family members during the holidays. Mary Walls held a parlor social on Monday to benefit the Odd Fellow’s Club. Julia Mack is home with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.W.C. Mack for the holidays. She is a student at State Normal School. Bessie Mack has been at home sick for a few months she is getting ready to return to school at the State Normal School. The Sunshine Girls’ Club of DC had an event at Groce’s (Gross’) Hall on December 26th. It was well attended. During the holidays Mary Tinsley and Marie Walls from Chester, Pa visited parents and other relatives in Lakeland. Last Monday Verna Waters from Elkridge. Md visited Georgiana Hughes. Several have new Arcola heating plants in their homes. They include J.W. Mack, James Stevenson, John Spriggs and Harriet Wright.

The Baltimore Afro American April 14, 1928 Lakeland, Maryland A Thanksgiving service was held at First Baptist Church for Harmony Temple No. 349 of Bladensburg on Sunday evening at 3:30. The pastor of First Baptist, Rev. Abbot preached. At Embry AME Church Sunday School was held at 9:30 and Rev. Wing preached at 8:00 in the evening. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Johnson, Charles has been at home for two weeks due to a lacerated tooth. On Tuesday evening Eunice Johnson was given a surprise party. Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Moody, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Brooks, Mr. and Mrs. James A. Gray, Emma Conway, Susie Briscoe, Eliza Gray, Gertrude Walls, Pauline Gray, Louis Gray, Elmo Poole, Henry Henson and Charles Stewart attended the event. Miss Johnson was given many gifts. Mr. and Mrs. Victor Randall hosted her mother, Emma Rollins and younger siblings over the Easter holiday. The Gays had visitors on Easter Sunday. They were two sons with their families, M. Willis, Miss Brooks, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Turner from Washington and their children and Elizabeth Tilghman from New York. Julia Mack is at home for the holiday with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.W.C. Mack. Miss Mack is a student at Bowie Normal School. On Thursday many parents and children attended the annual field meet in Marlbora(o). On Sunday James H. Gray, Louis Gray, Arthur Brooks, Joseph Thomas, George Robinson, and Raymond Jones went to Blue Plains on a visit to the Old Folk’s Home. On Sunday Rex Isaac, from Laurel, MD visited Mrs. Arthur Brooks.

The event will be sponsored by the Magaline Household of Ruth No. 6379 On Sunday evening Mr. and Mrs. James H. Gray hosted Rev. and Mrs. E.N. Thomas. Mr. and Mrs. William Gross and Mr. and Mrs. Guss have new Arcola Heating Plants. Mr. and Mrs. John Brooks are visiting their daughter and son-in-law Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hamlett. Several Lakeland residents went to Brentwood, Md on Friday evening to attend a political mass meeting. The Lakeland Community Band played during the event. On Saturday evening Dorothy Mack, Chesley Mack and Clarence Gray traveled to the State Normal School in Bowie, Maryland to witness a football game. They were hosted by Bessie and Julia Mack as well as Robert Gray, students at the institution.

On Tuesday several residents traveled to Laurel for the six-part joint school meeting. Attendees from Lakeland were Ellen Johnson, Ellen Briscoe, Mamie Weems, Chesley Mack, Cornelia Jiles, George Randall, Mr. and Mrs. J.C. Johnson and Mr. and Mrs. James Gray. Mr. and Mrs. George Randall hosted the sister and brother-in-law of Mrs. Randall, Mr. and Mrs. McLeod from New York City. The list of sick in the community includes Hattie Burke, Eliza Bowie, Fannie Brown, Thomas Johnson, and James Singleton. Yesterday Bessie and Julia Mack returned to Bowie Normal School. Pauline Gray is back home after a two month stay in Atlantic City, NJ. On Sunday Mr. and Mrs. John Spriggs made a visit to Thomas Greene who is ill in Crownsville, Md For the last week Georgianna Stewart has been ill. She is getting better. Last Sunday Benjamin Thomas was hurt when he was hit in the head with a baseball bat by his brother. He is unwell. On Friday night the Union Band of Lakeland will have a regular meeting at Embry AME Church.

On Sunday Bertha Gray and Irene Clark hosted Mr. and Mrs. Mills and their daughter from Highridge Maryland. Julia Mack was at home with her parents during the holidays. On Saturday Charles Stokes of Baltimore visited Bessie Mack. On Sunday Mr. and Mrs. James H. Gray hosted Rev J.W. Wing and Mr. and a Mrs. Frank Turner from Washington DC. On Saturday Sarah and Rosetta Brooks left for New York. They have no set plan to return. Hannah Thomas is home from the hospital Those sick include Agnes Forest, Alberta Ross, Janie Tabbs, Ruth Taylor and Nannie Tate.

Washington Times September 26, 1911 Page 9 Pictures Obtained From High Altitude Are Clear and Distinct Officers at the Army Aviation School at College Park have been experimenting with areal photography. Their results were good. Photos were taken from a Wright biplane traveling at thirty-five miles per hour at 500 feet using an ordinary lens. Lt. Kirkland was a passenger while Lt. Henry H. Arnold acted as pilot. Displayed in the newspaper edition three of the pictures. One shows large goldfish ponds at Lakeland. The photograph was taken from 800 above. Another image shows hangers at the airfield. The third picture shows truck farms and gardens between College Park and Hyattsville. Photos taken in this way would be useful in quickly establishing enemy fortifications. Army members will continue experimenting with taking pictures at increasing heights. Their goal is to successfully make usable images of the ground from an altitude 1,000 feet.

The Baltimore Afro American June 3 1921 pg 11 Lakeland On June 1 there was a rally at First Baptist Church. Present for the event were Rev. Manokey of Campbell AME Church, Anacostia DC, Rev A.A. Murray of Bladensburg, Md, Rev. Dames of Embry AME along with their congregations. The event was held by George Branson and Rev. M. W. Lucus is pastor. Despite thunder showers $12 was raised and the church was at capacity. A.C. Tolson has been sick in bed for two weeks. He is now getting better and is out and about. Mildred Russell is still ill but she is improving. Julia Douglas hosted Julia Mills, Lily Cregg, Matilda Chesley, Rev and Mrs. Manokey of Anacostia DC as well as Rev and Mrs. Dames, Mr. and Mrs. J.W.C. Mack and family for dinner on Sunday. Lakeland School No. 3 District 1 held graduation exercises at Fairmont Heights MD on May 26,27 and 29. Graduates from Lakeland were Ames W. Brown, James. E. Lomax, Cara O. Briggs, Anna R. Gross, Arlina Madeline Hicks and Louise C. Lewis. Attendees were Mrs. S.J. Lewis, Benjamin Hicks, Julia Mack, Bessie Mack, and young Lewis. Mrs. S.J. Lewis has returned home after attending her father’s funeral in North Carolina. Principles of the Community Club of Lakeland are 1.To better traveling conditions 2. To have lights installed 3. To bring about Christian unity in the Lakeland community.

Rev. Taylor preached at 8 pm. The day marked and end to Spring Revival. Rev. Franklin P. Turner will preach his farewell sermon on Sunday, April 18. At the Baptist Church on Sunday Mary E. Johnson the superintendent opened Sunday School. Rev Trueheart preached at the 11 am service. Rev. Abbott preached at 3 pm with the Federation club in attendance. Rev. Snowden from Murmick (Muirkirk) preached at 8 pm. Children attended a program at Marlboro on Saturday April 10th. Some of the youngsters earned awards. Mrs. Stephens has been ill but she is getting better.

There was a large audience at the movie presentation last Monday. Ambrose Greene went to visit in Bowie on Tuesday in order to visit his sister and her son. Hannah Thomas has been ill and she is improving. The movie was a successful event.

The teacher will be Rev. Wing, James H. Gray will act as president, Robert R. Gray will be secretary, Cornelius Giles will act as treasurer. On Sunday night Mary Falls joined Embry AME Church. Cornelius Giles was sick for a week but is out and about again. Young Randolph Brooks is at home sick with pneumonia. On Sunday evening Susie Briscoe hosted Mr. and Mrs. William Chase, Katie Dock and William Lee of Bladensburg. On Sunday evening Miss Minor hosted Rachel and Mary Jackson and Robert Oston of Washington DC M. Everhart of Washington DC will be taking a room in the home of Miss Minor during the winter.

Dudley made the first score and Brown the extra point. Carr made the second touchdown and Brown again kicked the extra point. Rev, Jones from Brentwood AME Zion Church gave the sermon at 3 PM. Many members of that congregation were also present. At the evening service three children of Mr. and Mrs. George Brooks were christened. Rev. Mrs. J.A. Maxey, evangelist from Washington DC gave sermon at First Baptist. On Monday August 6th the Baptist ministers’ Conference of Washington DC will meet at Lakeland First Baptist Church from 12 to 5 PM. Lunch will be served. Rev. A.P. Abbott is pastor. There was a moving picture show at Embry AME Church on Friday evening. Mary Spriggs was chairman for the event. Maggie Mack sponsored a rally which raised $30 for a pulpit set. Rev. Wright preached a sermon. Washington Harpist Princess Richardson will perform a concert at First Baptist Church on Monday evening August 6. Mr. and Mrs. George Gross are hosting ing their daughter Margaret Gray and grandson Charles from New York. An entertainment for the orphan children of Washington DC was held at Mack’s Park. The event was sponsored by Morning Star Lodge No. 40 and Forest Temple, No. 9, I.B.P.O.E. of W of Washington DC Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Thomas hosted his sister, Mary Boldin and her daughters Anna, Agnes, Mary and Alice for a week’s visit. On Sunday Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Thomas hosted Mr. and Mrs. Maron Mack, Louise Mack, Marion White, Miss Brown, Carrie Cole of New York and Eddie Smith. Maggie Mack hosted a number of people at her home. He was accompanied by some of the members of that church. Rev Wing, Embry’s pastor preached his farewell sermon at 8 pm. Friday night there was a contest sponsored by the Federation of Women of Brentwood, Bladensburg, Hyattsville and Lakeland. The event was a benefit for the new high school. First Baptist Church had communion service at 3 pm Mr. and Mrs. George Gross Sr are celebrating the birth of a new grandson in New York City. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Dory, Harriet Hughes, Beatrice Thomas, Hattie Thomas, Ferdinand Hughes and young Josephine and James Waters visited Baltimore on Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. James Gray ad Mrs. Irene Clark hosted Mr. and Mrs. Louis Sellman of Contee Maryland on Sunday. Mrs. Contee is the sister of Mrs. Gray. A speaking competition was held at Fairmont Heights on Friday April 27th. George H. Randall and Hattie Thomas competed for Lakeland School. Hattie Thomas was awarded third place. Eliza Greene, Mamie Edmonds and Emma Green are at home with the grippe. A party was given for Ruby Briscoe’s 6th birthday. Baltimore Afro American September 3, 1927 p. 15 Lakeland, Maryland On Sunday at 10:30 Sunday School was held at Embry Church with George Randall acting as superintendent. That afternoon Rev. Wing, George Randall, C. Giles and J. Gray went to Kensington, Maryland for 3 pm services. Next Sunday Embry will have their quarterly conference. The congregation of Embry Church will join with Dent AME Church for joint services at Dent on September 4th and at on Sunday September 11th at Embry. The Sunday Schools of First Baptist and Embry will hold a picnic at Suburban Gardens on August 20th. Stephen Taylor and George Randall are responsible for the event. Mary Walls and Nellie Stewart had Mr. and Mrs. Randolph Matthews of Steelton, Pa and their daughter, Dorothy as weekend guests. Hannah Thomas and Mary Walls returned from the two-day convention of the Household of Ruth. Mrs. Walls served as delegate from the Magdaline Household No.6379, G.U.O. of O.F. of Lakeland. Mary Walls held a successful lawn fete to benefit the Household of Ruth last Friday. Ambrose Green. Mrs. Emma Greene, Jr and their daughter Marie visited Baltimore on Sunday, March 13, 2022 Last Sunday Ellen Briscoe, Helen Briscoe, Dorothy Mack and Delarice Dory went to the camp meeting in Muikirk. Mr. and Mrs. Albert Johnson and family had as guests Winnie Lewis of Greensboro NC. Bertha Brown from Baltimore is visiting her sister, Mrs. J. H. Gray for a week. She arrived with her husband, Mr. S. Brown. He will go home on Monday. Mr. and Mrs. Gray and their family had several guest on Sunday evening, Mr. and Mrs. Lorger Green and sons, Mr. and Mrs. Ned Jones and sons, Pearl Prout, Mr. Boone and others from Calvert County Maryland as well as Mr. and Mrs. Frank Turner and family from Washington, DC. Mary Spriggs from Lakeland and Rosa Harrison of Muirkirk attended the Elk’s Convention in New York. They stayed with Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Washington in Brooklyn NY. During their visit the Washingtons gave several parties to honor their guests. Mrs. Mary Spriggs spent an afternoon with Mrs. Johnson and her son Eugene during her time with Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Washington. After a two week visit in New York Mary Walls has returned home. Georgiana Steward is hosting her grandchild Mary Daly and her daughter Josephine and Miss Louise Brooks of New York for a two week visit. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Brooks are hosting their daughter Mary Brewer of New York for a visit. Mr. and Mrs. N.J. Thomas hosted Mr. and Mrs. Thomas and Miss J. Grant of Washington DC on Sunday. Viola Gross and her friend John Bowie of Washington DC visited Philadelphia PA on Sunday. Julia Briscoe, George Briscoe ,Mr. and Mrs. Mack, Mr. and Mrs. Tolson and their family paid a visit to friends and family members in Charlotte Hall, Md on Sunday.

Students of Bowie Normal School, Julia and Bessie Mack visited their parents for the weekend. James Gray and Susie Briscoe have been ill but are improving. Mr. and Mrs. Alex James had several friends over on Thursday night. They included Gertrude Walls, Dessimae Randall, Julia Brooks, Grace Johnson, Laura Weems, Eliza Gray, Gladys and Lavella Brown, William Rollings, Earl Mason, Louis Gray of Lakeland as well as Aubry Corprew, M Smith , M. Johnson from Washington DC. Samuel Stewart returned home after several months as an inpatient stay at Crownsville Hospital. James Gray with his sons Oscar, Louis and Clarence as well as Rogers Rice traveled to Bowie on Sunday to visit Robert Gray. Robert is a student at the Bowie Normal School. Mary Spriggs at home ill. George Taylor used to live in Lakeland. He now lives in Philadelphia.

Waldron of Kensington preached at 3 PM and Rev E.N. Thomas of Dent AME Church preached at 8 PM. Julia Briscoe had guests on Sunday they were Mr. and Mrs. Thomas along with their daughter as well as Mr. and Mrs. L.S. James of Bowie. The on Labor Day the annual picnic of Vermont Avenue Church and Sunday School took place at Mack’s Summer Garden. Agnes Gross and her nieces made a three week visit to her sister Emma Braxton in Philadelphia, Pa. They also visited family members in New York and Atlantic City. Emma Rollin from Elkridge Maryland and her family were weekend visitors of her daughter and son in Law, Mr. and Mrs. Victor Randall. Mrs. Randall’s uncle Roy Thompson from Baltimore made a visit. Thomas Johnson is home from Freedman’s Hospital Benjamin Thomas has a fractured skull and is being treated in Freedman’s Hospital James Singleton was hit by an electric streetcar Friday night. He was treated at the hospital for a broken leg. Mr. and Mrs. J.W.C. Mack and their family had dinner guests on Sunday. They were Mrs. Daniel Stockes with the daughter Quather Stokes of Baltimore, and Mary Mahoney of New York, City. Mr. and Mrs. A. Tolson and Mrs. Briscoe had guests on Sunday. They were Mrs. Mollie Thomas with her two daughters, Mrs. Odessa Butler and son. Mrs. George Briscoe and son, Nr. R. Thomas, Mr. Whaler, Mr. Webster Tolson residents of Charlotte NC Rev. John Whalen, Mrs. Walen and family were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Mack for a few days.

Abbott preached at 3 pm and at 8pm Rev. Franklin Turner preached. Speakers at the service were Sister Bundy and Sister Warfield. Both are from Washington. The congregation will be going to St. Paul AME Church on September 19 people are asked to help with transportation by driving their cars. At First Baptist Church the Sunday School was opened by superintendent, Mary E. Johnson. Rev. Young from Washington DC preached a 11 am and 8 pm. Pastor, Rev Abbott is back from his vacation. The time away was a gift from the Willing Worker's Club and other members of the congregation. A revival will be held at the baptist church from September 19 until October 3. Mary Brooks and her nieces visited her mother, other relatives and friend in Virginia for a week. The new school was dedicated by the Parents and Teacher's Association on Labor Day. Speakers during the event were Mr. McDonald, Mr. J. St, Conway, Mrs. Condasin, Mrs. Plummer, and Supervisor Brooks. Classes started on September 13 with Miss Gardner and Miss Foster as teachers. Mr. and Mrs. John Spriggs and Mr. Joseph Johnson traveled to Calvert's County by automobile.

Mr. and Mrs. Greene hosted guests James Carter of New York, Cornelius Carter, John Brown and Ambrose Jackson of Washington DC on Sunday. Young Marie and Dorothy Greene are making a weekend visit to their godmother, Josephine Ford in Washington DC Mr. and Mrs. Moody are hosting Miss Evelyn Moody (sister of Thomas) and M. Patterson of Jersey City for a week’s visit. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Thomas have as guests the Misses Greene from Baltimore Chesley Mack, Lawrence Brooks and his wife, Pauline Gray and Eugene Brown are making a visit to Montreal. Baltimore Afro American August 26, 1921 Lakeland, Maryland Planning is nearly done for rebuilding of Embry AME Church. Their goal is to get work underway and finished before the weather turns cold. Embry AME Church is preparing for a village camp meeting August 28 to September 18 with services each Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings. A large tent will house the events. They invite pastors, and musical groups to participate. Rev. J.A. Dames is pastor and George Randall is Church Clerk. Rev. Briscoe preached at 3 pm and presided over a quarterly conference. That night the Christian Endeavor League reorganized with M.A. Briscoe as president. Embry AME Church is planning is underway for a rally to be held in July. It will be a benefit to raise funds for remodeling the church. Charles S. Dorsey had Reve and Mrs. Dames and Mr. and Mrs. Arthur ? to dinner last Sunday. At First Baptist Church Rev. Sister Goins of Baltimore preached to benefit a rally sponsored by Pleasant Brown. The Community Club has made improvements to Lakeland’s roads. The group’s leadership is Mary Walls as president and Hannah Thomas as secretary. They are building a petition to be given to the county commissioners requesting the county take over care of the roads. J.W.C. Mack had Rev. W.H. Paton as a guest. On Sunday while playing ball Joseph Thomas was hit with a ball and lost consciousness. Mr. William Gross is building a large hall. Sadie Gross has returned home after a visit with friends in Baltimore The funeral for John Cregg of Anacostia was held at Ebenezer Church in Washington.

April 19, 1930 Lakeland Hi Wins Lakeland High School’ baseball team won its season home opener beating Marlboro High school 9 to 3. Pitchers were Gross and Carroll. The Lakeland team also traveled to Bowie where they beat the Bulls. Gross pitched a no hit game.

All were in support of raising funds to remodel Embry AME Church. The goal is $600. Help from friends and others is invited. A benefit concert was held at Gross Hall by the Concert Company of Washington, DC. on June 30 for the cause. First Baptist Church held Children’s Day. Arthur Brooks is superintendent there and the pastor is Rev. M.W. Lucus. Rev. A. A. Murray of Dents Chapel Bladensburg performed the marriage ceremony of Charles S. Dorsey and Miss Slaughter at Mr. Dorsey’s home in Washington DC. Present were immediate family members Mr. and Mrs. Dorsey had a dinner party. Baltimore Afro- American June 24, 1921 Lakeland Pastor of Embry AME Church is Rev. J.A. Dames. Visiting the church were Rev. R. H. Dames, Presiding Elder from the Madison District of the Florida conference and his young daughter Erma. Rev. R.H. Dames preached at 11 am service. The church was full that evening for Children’s Day exercise put on by the Sunday School headed by superintendent, George Randall. Susie Gray acted as organist. A large group from the Community Club went before the County Commissioners of Prince Georges County to present a petition asking that Lakeland’s roads be placed on their care. The Community Club had an entertainment event at Brown Store. Rev. M.W. Lucus is pastor of First Baptist Church. The men of the church presented a program on the tribes of Israel and raised $5000. Members of Embry’s Sunday School and Superintendent Randall visited Queens Chapel in Muirkirk for their Children’s Day exercises. Mr. and Mrs. Green of Washington DC moved into the former home of Mr. and Mrs. Palm. Victor Randall married Francis Rallings from Elkridge, Md Mrs. Daniel Washington was accidently hit on the face by a ball. Baltimore Afro-American May 6, 1921 Lakeland Pastor of Embry, Rev. S. T. Crawford was away at conference. Sister Annie Jones sponsored a missions day at the church. She lives in College Park but had lived in Baltimore. Participants in services that day included Rev Miner of Alexandria Memorial Church in Washington DC, Rev. Authur A. Jones of Northern Baptist Church of Baltimore. The event raised $12 for missions. Embry AME Church was assigned a new pastor. Mary Falls gave a grand entertainment to benefit Embry Church. Mr. and Mrs. James Gray went to the AME Church Conference in Baltimore. Mr. Spencer Mack from Baltimore visited J.W.C. Mack in Lakeland. Master Wesley Brown a son of Mr. and Mrs. Pleasant Brown fell from a tree and was hurt. N. Brewer shot himself while cleaning a gun. He is better. Julia Briscoe, Ellen Briscoe, Mr. and Mrs. J.W.C. Mack plan to go to the Elks parade and dance at Lyric Theater on May 12 in Baltimore. Harriet Hughes has been sick at home but is better now.

This group was approved to receive a high school on August 10, 1926. The school, now being constructed will serve the communities of Laurel, Muirkirk, Ammendale, Lakeland, Bladensburg and North Brentwood. After finishing grade school children will now be ablet to attend a convenient high school. The new structure will cost about $25,000 and be of red brick with good heating, light and ventilation. Its location will be the central community of Lakeland. A campaign has started to repay an obligation of $2,500. to the Board of Education to pay for the land. The fundraising began on April 3 and $1,000 has already been promised with $700 already received The community is pleased about the new school and a ceremonial laying of the cornerstone is being planned along with other special events. A Dramatic Recital by Gabriella B. Drake to benefit the school has been set for late this August. Much of the work to make the school a reality has been undertaken by the Colored Parent-Teacher Institute, a collective of scholarly, fearless and progressive in their work endeavors. The group’s spokesman is W. J. Conway of North Brentwood a Howard University graduate and head of a private secondary school in Washington DC. Afro-American November 3, 1922 “RAZZ” The true story of a half-white, half-colored girl in Lakeland, Prince Georges County, Md Short Story The story takes place in a village called Lakeland and centers on the character of Razz. Her birth name and is not known. Nor is her origin. She appeared in the settlement as a small child who skated around the dusty town. Someone started calling her Razz and the name stuck. Razz was a young woman of strong and independent nature. She wore clothing traditional for men and chose hard labor for her work. She was marked by the belief that she was of mixed race and did not know the identity of her father. Razz did not feel she fit in the white or black communities. Despite this she was the leader among the children due to her athletic abilities.

Evening Star May 29 1906 p 1 Will Depart Tomorrow- The Vising Indian Prince Much Pleased With His Visit. Tomorrow His highness the Maharaja Gaekwar of Baroda and his wife will leave Washington to go to Philadelphia. He described his time in Washington as “one of the most interesting visits in any city of any country”. After a two day stay in Philadelphia their highnesses will go to Boston then on to western states. During their visit in our region the maharaja gave a short address at National Park Seminary. The pair attended a dinner hosted by the French ambassador and Mme. Jusserand. He made a visit to the Smithsonian Museum and was given an automobile tour of various parks by Senator and Mrs. Elkins. They visited a reform school on Sunday morning accompanied by Shimont Sampatrao Gaekiyard. The group later visited the Maryland Agricultural College. President of the Aquarium Fisheries of Lakeland in Prince Georges county Maryland, Edward A. Newman took them to his facility for a visit. They seemed very interested in what they saw and had numerous questions. The maharajah said he had decided to establish a similar facility in India. The group next went to Luray caverns.

Evening Star October 14, 1924 Page 36 An inspection visit was made to the Fisheries at Lakeland by Commerce Secretary Hoover. Henry O'Malley commissioner of fisheries acted as guide. The facility had six ponds containing about 200,000 bass. Fish produced at Lakeland are used to stock Eastern streams and ponds.

Evening Star January 5, 1927 Page 2 Newspaper Article Attorney, Builder, Inventor and Democratic Leader Expires Following Illness As an active member of the Democratic party he organized the local club, was chairman of the central committee and acted as delegate to the national convention. Mr. Newman was a supporter of William Jennings Bryan during his presidential candidacy. Newman published a newspaper called National Watchman which focused on politics. As a practicing attorney he was a member of Baldwin, Hopkins and Peyton a firm of patent attorneys. In addition to his work in law Mr. Newman helped to develop College Park, built fisheries in Lakeland and received a patent for his invention of a thermostat. He was from Allentown, PA. His survivors are his widow, sons, Cloud and Edwin Peires Shoemaker Newman as well as four daughters Mrs. Arthur Drefs, Mrs. John Cammack, Helen Carbery Newman and Asdia Walser Newman as well as grandsons Francis, David, Paul and John Newman and John and William Cammack.

An earlier edition of the column gave information on the bureau of fisheries in Lakeland. It gave a positive report of the results there from a small area of the fishery. G.C.Leech the head of the division of fish culture is promoting the purchase of the whole area which is seventy acres. The cost for this would be $100,000. A year ago eight crappie were placed in a six acre pond. In October 35,000 were retrieved measuring three to three and one half inches. With a larger facility it is predicted several hundred million bass, crappie and bluegill beam could be produced....

Washington Post Page 14 Outside of the City Limits Millions Have Been Invested A Comprehensive Review of the Marvelous Development Which is in Progress Around the Nations Capital Edwin A. Newman owner of Lakeland named the lake in honor of his wife. The lake covers an area of 7 acres and is 5 feet deep. It is fed by more than 100 springs and a 20 inch pipe from Paint Branch. The lake was created 20 years ago by the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad when they harvested gravel for ballast. Newman improved the site as a lake. He is now developing the surrounding area as a twelve and a half acre park. This will include stocking the lake with about 10,000 bass, adding plants and pleasure boats. Sidewalks and an electric light plant will be added and there is a post office. A weekly newspaper will be published. Improvements are valued at $135,000 with $65,000 more improvements expected in the l next 8 months. Listed are some of the community’s residents and property owners.

Washington Post January 27, 1924 PageSM5 Near Maryland Agricultural College is a fish breeding facility on Land leased by the government. It has been used to breed goldfish. Now 23 acres of the 75 acre tract is used for crappie, bluegill bream and large mouth bass. Fish from the facility are used to stock creeks and rivers in Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and New York. To test the conditions 23 acres were stocked and the results were very favorable. Experts are advocating for the new facility at Lakeland and say it would be a boost to the economy. US lags with other countries in their consumption of fish. The process used in raising the fish is similar to that used in producing chickens. The fish are transported using steel rail cars which carry 100 to 150 ten gallon containers holding 100 to 1,000 fish each.
