Joseph G. Brooks was born in 1871 and married his wife Rosa in 1896. As of 1910, he was living in a mortgage-free home on Lakeland Road with his wife and seven children. According to oral history, he lost his arm while working with a rail switching operation. Around the opening of the 20th century, the Brooks and Johnson families moved from the eastern section of Lakeland to the central section, an area populated by whites.
This whole page is pictures from donor's sister's prom - she graduated from McKinley Tech in DC in 1975. It was a college preparatory school, that many people sought to attend. Donor and his brother didn't attend their prom.

Photo of Lakelander Myron Gray at Longfellow House Office Building greeting Congressman Nick Begich of Alaska, circa 1970-1971. Begich was also Myron's political science instructor at University of Alaska, which Myron attended in 1965 while in the Airforce; he enlisted for 49 months. Myron served as an "unofficial aide" of Congressman Begich saving newspaper articles of his features. Congressman Begich died in an airplane crash and was never recovered. His wife later took over his position. Woman pictured is congressional aide.
