Urban Renewal in Lakeland

Weygandt Case

The geographical area of Lakeland’s urban renewal district extended slightly beyond the traditional community to include the area along Route One and some industrial properties. All Black Lakelanders whose property was marked for accession by urban renewal lost their land. The outcome was different for one white family, the Weygandts. They owned an industrial business with an on-site residence on the edge of Lakeland. Mr. and Mrs. Weygandt fought the city and won, a result that Black Lakeland families and business owners did not experience. These documents tell that story.
