Urban Renewal in Lakeland

Federal guidelines for urban renewal required the establishment of a “Project Area Committee” made up of residents to advise on the program in their community. A former committee chairman said of the process, “They told us they would do one thing, then they did something else.” Over time the city’s proposed plan changed. One committee member kept the new plans in a tote bag which she passed on to her daughter. Here are those plans along with the grant application submitted to the federal government.
